What is the northernmost point of the African mainland?

Ras Ben Sakka is the seaward end of Cape Angela. And it is the northernmost point of the African mainland.

Cape Agulhas, which is in South Africa, is the southernmost point of Africa. It is the opposite of Ras Ben Sakka which is the northernmost point of the African mainland.

Ras ben Sakka is the Arabic for Cape Ben Sakka. It is the tip of a headland called Cape Angela. Ras ben Sakka extends from Cape Angela into the Mediterranean Sea. Cape Angela and Ras ben Sakka are on the northern coast of Tunisia, which is a North African country.

Since 2014, Ras ben Sakka has been recognized as the northernmost point of the African mainland. However, it is not the northernmost point of the entire African continent; that position is occupied by Iles des Chiens of Tunisia, which is a small island in Tunisia.

Before Ras ben Sakka gained recognition as the northernmost tip of the African mainland, Cape Blanc (Cap Blanc or Ras al-Abyad) was mistakenly thought to be the northernmost point of the African mainland. Hence Ras ben Sakka replaces Cape Blanc for that position.

Cape Angela itself is located about 15 kilometers from Bizerte, the northernmost city in Africa and it is also 22 kilometers from Ichkeul Lake – all of these landmarks are in Tunisia, making Tunisia the northernmost country on the African mainland (where the African mainland means the African main continent, excluding the many island nations around it).

Tunisia is the northernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bordered by Libya to the southeast, Algeria to the west and southwest, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east. Its capital city is Tunis and has a population of 12.1 million, as of 2023.

It features important places such as Cape Angela and Ras Ben Sakka, Cape Blanc, the ruined city of Carthage, the Great Mosque of Kairouan, and Bizerte.
