Leopard vs Hyena, who would win in a fight?

Wildlife is quite full of surprises. I have always thought that the cat family is on top in the African jungle. However, I have seen some videos in which a hyena had the guts to steal a leopard’s prey and or chase a leopard off his prey in order to steal it from him. I thought it should be the other way around. Leopard and hyena, which of them is stronger and can really beat the other?

For me leopard stands the chance of defeating or killing a hyena in a one on one fight because, being a big cat, it has the sharp claws and all that it takes to win over a hyena. The disadvantage for leopard is that it works alone while hyenas work in packs.

I’m still of the view that hyenas have an upper hand. Hyenas are just as ferocious as the big cats. And from most videos I have watched they boss over leopards all the time – steal their prey and, sometimes, chase the leopard off.

I see in this video that a hyena tries to steal a leopard’s kill. The leopard did not just run but hit the hyena back, but that did not stop the hyena. It looks like hyenas will do anything it takes to have a meal no matter how dangerous it is — even if they have to risk their lives for it. There is something about hyenas too – they are bold and persistent.

In a one on one encounter, a hyena does not stand a chance against a leopard ….

Thanks for the clarification. I have always thought of leopards as being stronger than hyenas, just that a few videos I watched nearly changed my mind.

Let’s look at some differences between hyenas and leopards:

In size, leopards are slightly bigger than hyenas. For hyenas, their primary weapon of defense and attack is their mouth. So when fighting, they try reaching the enemy with their mouth. But leopards have retractable sharp claws that are able to cut and tear, in addition to their sharp teeth. In a fight, leopards start with their hands and sharp claws before their sharp teeth.

In a one-on-one fight, a leopard having two primary weapons, claws and teeth, is more likely to win against a hyena which has only one weapon, teeth.

Hyenas, on the other hand, have a very powerful bite force of 1100 PSI. Much higher than the bite force of a leopard which is between 300 and 310 PSI. Meaning that if a hyena and a leopard bite each other, the leopard will sustain a worse injury than the hyena.  Both animals can run fast.

The greatest advantage a hyena has over a leopard is that hyenas operate in groups – they may attack or defend in groups. Teamwork is the hyena’s biggest and smartest survival strategy in the wild. If you offend one, you offend all. If a leopard kills one hyena, he literally signs his own death warrant because the rest of the hyena family will come after him for revenge – leopards know that very well.

In addition to teamwork, hyenas outnumber leopards by far. No doubt hyenas are bold and sometimes boss over leopards – they know the family is watching their back.
