What is the African mainland?

The African mainland refers to the African continent, without its surrounding islands. The African mainland excludes the six sovereign island countries and other islands which are overseas territories of other countries. The six sovereign island countries that are not on the African mainland are  São Tomé and Príncipe, Cape Verde, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, and Madagascar. Hence, the African mainland is home to 48 countries and a population of over 1 billion people.

The African mainland is an incredibly vast and diverse region, spanning across a multitude of countries, each with its own unique culture, language, and breathtaking landscapes. From the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert, where the shifting sands create an ever-changing canvas, to the lush rainforests of Central Africa, teeming with an abundance of plant and animal life, this continent offers a truly awe-inspiring array of natural wonders.

The African mainland is divided into regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, the Sahel region, the Horn of Africa, the Congo Basin, etc. It also consists of five main subregions such as Northern Africa, Eastern Africa, Central Africa, Southern Africa, and Western Africa. The extreme points of the mainland: Ras ben Sakka is the northernmost point, Cape Agulhas is the southernmost point, Pointe des Almadies is the westernmost point, and Ras Hafun is the easternmost.
